Application of Electron Microscopy to the study of smectites and zeolites

چکیده
Electron beam techniques namely Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), the closely related Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) find ample applications on the characterization of various types of geological materials including clays. They provide morphological, structural and chemical information down to the atomic scale. The principal advantage of the electron microscope over the light microscope is the much improved resolution, due to the very low wavelength of the energetic electron (<1 Å) compared to the visible light, which is employed in the optical microscope. An additional advantage of the microbeam instruments is the generation of X-rays from excitation of the samples when bombarded by electrons (Pownceby & Macrae, 2009). For these reasons the microbeam techniques have been employed successfully in the study of clay materials during the past 45 years.

The Synthesis of Zeolites A, X and HS from Natural Iranian Kaolinite and the Study of the Transformation of Zeolites X to HS and Zeolites Y to P by X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
Zeolites A, X and HS were synthesized from natural Iranian Kaolinite by alkaline fusion,,followed by refluxing the mixture. The transformation of zeolites X to HS and Y to P were studied at different time intervals by X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It was revealed that in solution, zeolites HS and P are more stable than zeolites X and Y respectively

The bentonites of Aftar region, with average of 15 meters thickness and about 10 km long, are volcanoclastic sequence of Semnan Formation that formed in a shallow sea water environment. Based on the field, XRD data, microscopic and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies, as well as chemistry, the bentonite beds contain zeolites (clinoptilolite and mordenite), gypsum, calcite, celestine, op...
متن کاملJarosite in a Pleistocene East African saline‐alkaline paleolacustrine deposit: Implications for Mars aqueous geochemistry
[1] Jarosite occurs within altered tephra from the saline‐alkaline paleolake deposits of Pliocene‐Pleistocene Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Zeolites (mainly phillipsite), authigenic K‐feldspar, and Mg/Fe‐smectites dominate the mineral assemblage, indicating saline‐ alkaline diagenetic conditions (pH > 9). As jarosite is ordinarily an indicator of acidic conditions on Earth and Mars, its association ...
متن کاملCa-modified MFI zeolite: A study on its synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity
Using hydrothermal synthesis process a series of Mobil Five (MFI) zeolites were synthesized with silica to alumina ratio (SAR) of 50, 100 and 200. The synthesized MFI zeolites were used to exchange with 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% Ca(NO3)2 solutions for modification of MFI zeolites to Ca-MFI zeolite. The formation of MFI zeolite phases was identified by XRD and FT-IR analysis. TGA...
متن کاملTemplate Assisted Method for Enhancing the Zeolite’s Ability to Capture Methionine
To investigate template effect on physicochemical properties of zeolite and enhance the molecular sieving properties, adsorption of methionine amino acid was studied by spectroscopic methods. Four zeolites such as methionine templated analcime, methionine templated zeolite P, N, N-dibenzyl N,N,N,N-tetramethylethylenediamine (DBTMED) templated analcime and free template analcime were synthesized...
